Thomas Nagel (1937-  )

      Nagel wrote a famous paper entitled "What is it Like to be a Bat?" in which he remarks: "No doubt it occurs in countless forms totally unimaginable to us, on other planets in other solar systems throughout the universe. But no matter how the form may vary, the fact that an organism has conscious experience at all means, basically, that there is something it is like to be that organism."

Don't ask Thomas Nagel
to study Hegel;
he'd rather be a bat
than do that.
    —Dean W. Zimmerman

      (Zimmerman suggests this should be a caption for a cartoon "of a bat with Nagel's face, putting wing over face in vampire fashion to avoid looking at a bust of Hegel.")
